Libya: Alain Juppe says Nato is ‘not doing enough’

Nato is not doing enough to destroy heavy weaponry used by Muammar Gaddafi’s forces in Libya, France’s foreign minister has said.(bbc.co.uk)

Libyan civilians remain at risk, Alain Juppe said, despite an ongoing bombing campaign now led by Nato.

“Nato must play its role fully. It wanted to take the lead in operations,” Mr Juppe said, saying efforts so far were “not enough”.

Suicide attack kills at least 13 in Afghanistan

A suicide bombing on a school in eastern Afghanistan killed at least 13 people and wounded 56 others, NATO officials said Monday.(cnn.com)

The Afghan interior ministry described a similar attack that killed 20 construction workers and wounded 56 others.

It was not immediately clear if NATO’s International Security Assistance Force and Afghan officials were talking about the same incident.

In ISAF’s account, an attacker drove a car bomb into a madrasa, a religious school, in the Bermal district of Paktika province at 12:30 a.m Monday.

Afghan contractors working for ISAF at a nearby base were staying at the school at the time of the attack, according to the force. Continue reading

NATO announces agreement on enforcing no-fly zone over Libya

NATO agreed Thursday to take command of enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya and was considering taking control of the full U.N.-backed military mission, Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told CNN.

Rasmussen’s announcement fell short of what U.S. President Barack Obama has sought, and it was unclear if concerns by Turkey and some other NATO allies over coalition airstrikes on Libyan ground forces would prevent NATO from agreeing to expand its command over the entire mission. Continue reading

Turkish navy to help NATO enforce Libya embargo

Turkey has offered four frigates, a submarine and a support ship to help enforce a NATO mission to enforce a U.N. arms embargo on Libya, the Western military alliance said on Wednesday. (reuters.com)

The alliance had offers of 16 ships to implement a decision to launch the mission taken by NATO this week, NATO military officer Brigadier Pierre St Amand told a news briefing. Continue reading

International forces have launched new air strikes near Libya’s rebel-held western city of Misrata, witnesses say.(bbc.co.uk)

Forces loyal to leader Colonel Gaddafi initially pulled back, but Misrata residents say snipers have continued to target people from rooftops.
